MONRE transferred the tsunami scenarios to the Center Earthquakes Communication and Tsunami Hazard Warning

Concretize tsunami hazard on the warning map

Along with 25 tsunami hazard warning scenarios, Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (MONRE) also delivered a tsunami hazard warning map system for Center Earthquakes Communication and Tsunami Hazard Warning. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hien, deputy director of Center for Marine and Ocean- Atmosphere Interaction Research (CMOAR) under The Viet Nam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment (IMHEN) –MONRE said: when an earthquake occurred in the East Sea, the Center Earthquakes Communication and Tsunami Hazard Warning will enter the parameters of earthquakes into the warning map system. This system automatically calculates and determines the occurred ability of tsunamis in the territorial waters of Vietnam. It is selected out of 25 scenarios, respectively, from that given relevant maps and warning information. These maps will provide detailed information about the time of tsunami occurred to the coast, the tsunami height, extent of flooding caused by tsunami in coastal provinces ... Thereby, the Center will identify parameters of tsunami and regions needed to warning.

The early warning is essential task because a tsunami usually appears very quickly after a powerful earthquake off the coast. One dangerous scenario built by scientists is a strong 7.5 Richter scale earthquake occurred in south tropical Hai Nam Island, tsunamis can reach 2-3m, especially the expected earthquake occurred near the coast only after more than one hour, the tsunami was on to the coast. "If not identified early, operated tsunami warning system and timely make the information of tsunami warning, tsunami disaster will cause extremely seriously, major damage to people, causing flooding and direct attack destroyed the works, coastal homes" said Mr. Hien.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hien also said the direction of completing additional tsunami warning scenarios in the near future. In particular, researchers need to assess the tsunami risk for the population concentration, build additional scenarios for added warnings and prevent tsunamis.
It is necessary to promote advocacy and education to raise awareness of people and authorities in coastal areas to prevent themselves together with construction, improvement of maps and tsunami warning system. According to scientists, it should help alert people when an earthquake has occurred, it should leave the lower coastal areas.
